Telling Stories Expands
I offer Stories, On Writing (narrative writing tips) and Hiram Falls (Sketches & A Writer's Journey). Soon: Workshops and Challenges.
My Substack has been reborn.
Originally I was going to publish my first novel, Hiram Falls, on Substack as a serial. But, honestly, who is going to stick with a serial of a 95,000 word story?Besides, I have an agent who may just be able to sell it. If she doesn’t, I’ll publish it myself as a paperback, audiobook, podcast and ebook.
So then this Substack became a place to share some of the stories that led to the book: Sketches that were performed on stage. And then I started my series on how I wrote my book, A Writer’s Journal (yes, I’ve changed that name, too.)
But I’ve been a professional writer, editor and coach for over 50 years. I have much knowledge to offer about writing — everything from idea development to digital stories to spoken word to revision to … well, all sorts of things that could entertain and help you or help the writer hidden inside you.
So my Substack became Telling Stories. And I will be offering you this, for free:
Stories: my best from the past and new ones, too — fiction, nonfiction, Digital Stories, photo stories, spoken word and silent word stories.
On Writing: A narrative look at what I’ve learned; not your typical “tips” fare, but anecdotes of what I did or learned, what impact it had and how you can adopt it. If you choose.
Hiram Falls: Sketches, A Writer’s Journal and, when published, excerpts, discussion sessions, Chat and discounts.
Engagements — Challenges, Workshops, Chats and Guest Writers and Coaches. (Beginning in May. Some will be fee-based to raise money for three nonprofits I am supporting with this project.)
All this change has come about after a conversation with Sarah Fay at Substack Writers at Work who helped me realize that what I really want to do at this stage of my life is pass my knowledge on, to engage with other writers, to create stories and to have fun.
With all of you.
Because writing is fun. And writing is important, particularly in these times when we must articulate what we are thinking and imagining, what we believe and see and what we know to be true with clarity and power.
I hope you like the expansion of my site. Please follow the link to Telling Stories and poke around. I will be quietly posting more content — and writing a few new pieces — before I start increasing the pace of my sending you emails. I don’t want to jam your already cluttered mail box.
In a month or so, you will start getting my posts a little more frequently.
As always, tell me what you think. And thank you so much for supporting and subscribing to my work.
