Dear Geoff,

Such a touching, beautiful story. I hope, as part of your Hiram Falls book deal that you and only you shall narrate the audiobook. Not everyone has an ear for New England “accents.”

Live always,

Toni

Thank you so much, Toni, for reading the story and for your comment.

And thanks for the note about my voice. I have a barter agreement with a professional theater director to cast, direct and produce the audiobook/podcast and she really isn't too enthused about my reading it. She has lots of good reasons. But there is a part of me that would like to do it.

Be well. Hope you are doing OK down there.

P.S. I initially thought you were reacting to this story, my newest, which has two new characters (not in the book) that emerged during a 20-minute write I was leading a few months back. (Yes, I tweaked it a bit and cleaned it up before posting.) That story is here: https://geoffreygevalt.substack.com/p/mitch-and-amber-1974

I read that, too. Lovely story. Thank you. Best course of action for me is to start at the beginning. Too much of a law nerd, of late!

This piece is so accessible, so real, that as I listened, I began to feel as if an old timer in a town I had lived in my whole life was telling me a story about another town member from long ago. I felt so at HOME. But this is only my second favorite thing about this piece. The rhythm of your words is everything.

Love the story. One question: is this Grace or Jenny?

“Herb gives Grace a long hug and whistles for his dog, Toby.

“I’ll see you in the spring, Gracie. As a customer.”

Great catch. Thanks. I fixed it.

Peace.
